How to Get Cashback on Amazon Purchases: Eligibility and Payout Rules

Cashback on an Amazon order is not decided at Amazon’s checkout. It hinges on the rules of the cashback program linked to the card that paid:

  • Which program was active?
  • What kind of transaction reached the card?
  • Was the order later refunded?

Knowing how to get cashback on Amazon purchases means knowing the answers. Most of them can be checked before you press “Buy now”.

Eurostat reports that 78% of EU internet users bought goods or services online in 2025, so the question applies to most card holders. This guide follows the path from purchase to payout, using the Blackcat Amazon program as the worked case.

How Amazon cashback works on a card

An Amazon cashback card is a payment card linked to a reward program that returns a share of what you spend at Amazon. You pay as usual, the transaction reaches the card issuer with Amazon named as the merchant, and the program counts it when the month is calculated.

With Blackcat, the cashback on eligible Amazon purchases is 2%, with a €50 monthly maximum and a €0.10 minimum payout.*

Amazon cashback is recorded as bonus points at one point per euro and shown in the app. The rate belongs to the program, not the card: the same card on another program follows other rates and limits.

How to activate Amazon cashback

Holding the card does not switch the program on automatically – you need to choose and activate a program in the app. Here is how to activate Amazon cashback:

1 . Go to the Cashback section in the Blackcat app and select the 2% Amazon program.

2 . Activate it on the wallet your card is linked to. Any Blackcat card tied to that wallet – physical or virtual – can then be used.

3 . Pay on Amazon with that card as the payment method.

4 . After the month closes, check the reward in the app.

Timing matters. Rewards are calculated per calendar month, and the program that applies is the one active at 00:00 on the 1st day of the month in which the calculation is made – in practice, the program you hold when the month closes.

An illustrative case: Sofia in Lisbon has the Amazon program active and spends €320 on Amazon in May. On 28 May she switches to a balance reward. At 00:00 on 1 June the balance reward is active, so her May orders are not assessed at 2%, and the expected €6.40 does not arrive. Had she switched on 2 June, May would have counted under the Amazon program.

Which Amazon purchases qualify for cashback

To see which Amazon purchases qualify for cashback, look at how a payment reaches your card. A card payment carries the merchant’s name and the amount, much like a parcel label shows the sender and the weight but not the contents. The program reads that label: it can tell Amazon was paid, not whether the box held a kettle or a phone case.

Amazon cashback marketplace eligibility follows from this. An order from a third-party seller is still paid through Amazon’s checkout, the statement shows an Amazon marketplace descriptor, and the terms make no distinction between items sold by Amazon and by other sellers.

The Amazon cashback payment method rules are narrower. Only the part of an order charged to your Blackcat card can qualify: if a €90 order is split between €30 of gift card balance and €60 on the card, only the €60 counts. Amazon Pay at another retailer’s checkout is a different case, because that shop is not Amazon.

  • Card payment on Amazon, program active on that wallet: within the program’s scope, up to the €50 monthly cap.
  • Returned or cancelled order: no cashback on the refunded amount.
  • E-wallet top-ups, ATM withdrawals, transfers: excluded across the loyalty program.
  • Amazon gift card purchases, balance reloads, Prime, digital content: not named in the Amazon terms; confirm in the app before counting on a reward.

Amazon cashback after a refund

Amazon cashback after a refund follows one rule: the terms pay no cashback on returned goods and reversed sales, and the general loyalty rules exclude transactions that later result in money being paid back.

Returns are common in EU online shopping. As Your Europe sets out, goods bought online can be returned within 14 days of delivery without giving a reason, so an order placed on the 25th may come back after the month has closed.

As an illustration, Lukas in Munich buys a €249 robot vacuum and €36 of storage boxes on Amazon in March. At 2%, that is €5.70. He returns the boxes before March is calculated, so his cashback is based on the vacuum alone: €4.98. The terms do not describe what happens when a refund lands after the reward is credited; the reward history in the app shows any adjustment.

When is Amazon cashback paid

When is Amazon cashback paid? Once a month, for the previous calendar month, and usually around the middle of the following month, according to Blackcat’s rewards page. Monthly reward payouts have a €0.10 minimum.

The €50 cap shapes large purchases. Anna in Vienna orders a €2,800 laptop in November. At 2% that would be €56, but November’s Amazon reward stops at €50. An order in December starts against a new €50 limit.

Two rules can reduce a payout: bonus points can be used to cover outstanding liabilities to the issuer, and leaving the loyalty program altogether cancels unused bonus points. Switching between programs is not the same as leaving.

Can I combine Amazon cashback with other rewards?

Can I combine Amazon cashback with other rewards from the same card? Not on a single purchase. Only one bonus program can be active on a wallet at a time. Every purchase is assessed under the program of the wallet that paid for it.

The right choice depends on where your card spending goes. If most of it lands on Amazon, the Amazon program covers the purchases that matter most; if Amazon is a small share, a broader card cashback program or a balance reward may fit better.

The card cashback rules for each program sit in the same terms, with their own caps and conditions. Amazon’s own prices, coupons and Prime benefits are a separate layer that the card program does not depend on.

Key takeaways

Before you pay: activate the Amazon program on the wallet linked to your card. Through the month: keep it active until the month closes. What counts: the amount charged to the card, minus anything refunded. Payout: monthly, capped at €50, with a €0.10 minimum.

FAQ

How can a card purchase on Amazon qualify for cashback?

It must be charged to a card whose wallet has the Amazon program active, and it must not be refunded. Under the Blackcat terms, such purchases are rewarded at 2%, up to €50 a month.

What should you check before activating a cashback program?

Check the rate, the monthly cap, the minimum payout and the excluded transactions. Also check which wallet holds the program, and avoid switching before the month closes.

Do marketplace, merchant and payment-method rules affect eligibility?

Yes. Third-party seller orders go through Amazon’s checkout, but only the amount charged to your card counts. Amazon Pay at other shops is a different type of payment.

Can gift cards or wallet top-ups have different reward rules?

Yes. E-wallet top-ups are excluded, and Amazon gift card purchases and balance reloads are not named in the Amazon terms. Confirm them in the app first.

What happens to cashback if Amazon refunds a purchase?

The refunded amount drops out of the calculation. The program pays no cashback on returned goods or reversed sales.

When are qualifying rewards paid out?

Once a month, for the previous calendar month, usually around mid-month. Amounts below €0.10 are not paid.

Can different cashback programs be combined?

Not on the same purchase. One program can be active per wallet, and each wallet can carry a different program.
