Balance Rewards vs Interest: Bonuses and Savings Compared
A savings product and a fintech loyalty program can both show a yearly percentage next to your balance, but they rest on different contracts. Interest is what a bank pays for using your deposit; a balance reward is a bonus paid under a loyalty program’s rules while your money stays in an e-money account. Comparing balance rewards vs interest means checking who pays, who qualifies, how the amount is calculated, when it’s paid and what protects the money underneath.
How interest and balance rewards differ
Savings account interest is the price of a loan: a deposit is money you lend to the bank. An interest bearing account sets that price as a variable rate on instant-access money or a fixed rate on money locked for a term. Banks price these products against the ECB deposit facility rate, 2.50% since 16 September 2026.
Fintech rewards work differently. An electronic money institution (EMI) doesn’t take deposits, so it doesn’t pay deposit interest; a balance reward comes from a separate loyalty program with its own operator and terms.
Think of bank interest as rent: the bank uses your money and pays for the time it has it. A balance reward is closer to airline loyalty status – nobody borrows anything from you, the program rewards you for meeting its conditions, and the operator writes the rules and can amend them.
Banks that pay interest on account balance for everyday money pay far less than on money committed for a term:
| Household deposit type (euro area) | Average rate, August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Overnight deposits | 0.29% |
| Redeemable at three months’ notice | 1.25% |
| Agreed maturity up to one year (new business) | 2.13% |

Which account and program terms decide eligibility
With a bank, the contract’s rate applies once you hold the product. Bank account rewards and savings account bonuses add conditions, such as an introductory rate for new money or a bonus that lapses if you withdraw early.
With Blackcat, two sets of terms apply: the payment account terms of the issuer, Papaya Ltd., and the loyalty program conditions of the operator, Baltic Technology Solutions OÜ. You need a Blackcat card, must be at least 16 and activate the program in the app. One program can be active per wallet, and nothing accrues while you owe the issuer money.
For example, you can run a card cashback on your spending wallet and the balance reward on a second wallet holding your tax reserve, so you don’t have to pick one benefit for all your money.
How are balance rewards calculated?
Bank interest is usually calculated on your daily balance. The Blackcat balance reward also starts from daily figures:
- The program records your balance at 24:00 each day and averages it over the calculation period, from the 1st of one month to the 1st of the next.
- A weighted average of €300 or more sets the rate at 4% p.a.; below €300, it’s 2.2% p.a. There’s no cap on the qualifying balance.
- The rate is applied to the daily balances and divided by the actual number of days in the year.
The threshold is an average, not a floor. A graphic designer in Tallinn holds €100 for the first 20 days of October, then €1,000 for the last 11 after a client pays. Her average is about €419 (€100 × 20 plus €1,000 × 11, divided by 31), so 4% p.a. applies although her balance sat below €300 for most of the month. Her October reward is roughly €1.42: 13,000 euro-days × 4% ÷ 365.
Switching programs mid-month doesn’t split the period: the program active at 00:00 on the 1st of the following month settles the month just ended.
Balance reward payout rules
Rewards are paid monthly, in euros, into your payment account in the month after the calculation period, with a €0.10 minimum. Until then, an accrued reward is a balance of program points – an accounting unit, not money – and unpaid points are cancelled if you leave the program, close the account or owe the issuer money.
Credited bank interest earns interest itself, which is why banks quote an effective annual rate. The balance reward applies a simple rate within each month, but a payout left in the wallet becomes part of next month’s balance.
Can reward rates change?
Yes, on both sides. Variable bank rates follow the ECB, which raised its deposit facility rate to 2.25% in June 2026 and 2.50% in September. A fixed-term deposit shields you from cuts, at the cost of access to the money.
Loyalty program terms can be amended with at least 30 calendar days’ published notice, and the program can be suspended or terminated. The 4% p.a. reward is the current rate, not a commitment for future months.
Are e-money accounts covered by deposit insurance?
No, and this is where the two products differ most. Bank deposits are covered by national deposit guarantee schemes: under EU deposit guarantee rules, coverage is €100,000 per depositor per bank if the bank fails.
E-money isn’t a deposit, so it falls outside those schemes. EMIs must safeguard client funds instead, keeping them separate from their own money in segregated accounts or covering them with insurance or a guarantee, so that in an insolvency they’re ring-fenced for clients. That isn’t a public repayment guarantee or investment protection.
Blackcat is issued by Papaya Ltd., an EMI authorised by the Malta Financial Services Authority: the money behind the reward is safeguarded e-money, and the reward doesn’t change that.

Loyalty bonus vs savings account interest: what to compare
Compare the headline rates last. Check these first:
- Access: can you use the money any day, or is it locked for a term or a notice period?
- Conditions and payout: what the rate depends on, how often it’s paid and whether a minimum applies.
- Change rules: who can change the rate, and with how much notice.
- Protection and tax: deposit guarantee or safeguarding, and how your country taxes interest and loyalty rewards.
Someone in Vilnius with a €5,000 emergency reserve could fix it for 12 months at the August 2026 euro area average of 2.13% and receive about €106 before tax, with deposit guarantee cover but no access.
With the balance reward, the same €5,000 would come to about €200 over a year at 4% p.a. if the rate stays unchanged, which the terms don’t guarantee, with the money accessible and safeguarded rather than insured. The choice depends on which trade-off suits that money.
Key takeaways
- Bank interest pays for the use of your deposit; a balance reward is a loyalty benefit under program terms.
- The Blackcat reward uses a monthly weighted average: €300 or more for 4% p.a., 2.2% p.a. below, paid monthly.
- Bank rates and program conditions can both change.
- Deposits carry guarantee cover up to €100,000; e-money is safeguarded, not insured.

FAQ:
How does a loyalty reward on a balance differ from bank savings interest?
Interest is paid by a bank for using your deposit; a loyalty reward is paid by a program operator under program terms. So are fintech balance rewards bank interest? No – they follow different rules and come with different protection.
Which account and program terms determine eligibility?
Your payment account terms with the issuer and the loyalty program terms with the operator. For the Blackcat rewards program, you need a card, the program active on the wallet and no outstanding liabilities to the issuer.
How are qualifying balances and annualized rewards calculated?
Daily 24:00 balances are averaged over the month. The average sets the rate (4% p.a. at €300 or more, 2.2% p.a. below), which is applied to daily balances and divided by the days in the year.
When are rewards paid and what minimums can apply?
Once a month, in euros, in the month after the calculation period. Amounts under €0.10 aren’t paid.
Can the rate or program conditions change?
Yes. Program terms can change with at least 30 calendar days’ published notice, and variable bank rates move with the market.
How does e-money safeguarding differ from deposit insurance?
Deposit insurance repays bank depositors up to €100,000 per bank. Safeguarding ring-fences an EMI’s client funds from its own in an insolvency; it isn’t a public guarantee.
What should you compare before choosing between a reward program and savings account?
Access to the money, the conditions behind the rate, payout rules, who can change the terms, protection and tax.
