Cashback Debit Cards: Rewards vs Cash at the Checkout, a Disambiguation
"Cashback" means two completely different things in European payments. Cashback debit cards give you a small percentage back on what you spend. Cash at the checkout lets you ask the cashier for banknotes when you pay, so you can pick up cash and groceries in one stop.
The first is a reward that adds to your balance. The second is a convenient way to withdraw your own money without looking for a cash machine. Debit card rewards in the euro area are capped by design, because EU law limits the card fees that fund them – which is exactly why a clear, well-built programme is worth choosing carefully. This guide covers how each one works, what qualifies, and how to get the most out of both.
Two different things called cashback
So what is cashback on a debit card? In the reward sense, it is a rebate: you pay by card, and a percentage of the amount comes back to you later as a credit to your account. It is funded from the fee the merchant’s provider pays each time a card is used.
Cash at the checkout works differently. You ask for cash when you pay, the amount is added to your card transaction, and the cashier hands you notes. Your balance goes down by the cash amount, just as it would at a cash machine – the difference is that you get it at the till, in the same queue you were already standing in.
| Purchase reward | Cash at the checkout | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A percentage credited later | Banknotes, immediately |
| Effect on your balance | Increases it | Reduces it by the cash amount |
| Who pays | Funded from merchant card fees | Nobody; it is your own money |

Cashback Facts
Small numbers, big habits – what Europeans really do at checkout
Most Europeans can get cash at the checkout – far fewer use it. The ECB found that 57% of euro-area consumers had the option to withdraw cash at a shop counter, but only 28% had it and used it.
Security beats perks when people choose how to pay. Asked what would persuade them to try a new payment method, euro-area consumers put security at 37%, ease of use at 34% and cost at 29%, with loyalty programmes at 17%. A reward works best as a bonus on top of a card you already trust.
A €0.99 purchase can unlock €200 in cash. Lidl Germany cut its minimum purchase for a checkout withdrawal to under a euro in April 2025, with withdrawals of €10 to €200 free of charge.
Germany took €13.57 billion out of shop registers in one year. The EHI Retail Institute put 2024 checkout withdrawal turnover at that figure, up from €12.31 billion in 2023.
How Blackcat cashback works
Blackcat includes a loyalty programme right in the app. Every eligible card purchase receives a 0.1% reward. Keep a weighted average balance of €300 or more and the rate rises to 0.5% – five times the standard rate.
Rewards are calculated for each calendar month and credited automatically on the 10th of the following month, so there is nothing to claim, collect or redeem.
Like most cashback programmes, the reward applies to purchases rather than to moving money around. The following do not qualify:
- Cash withdrawals, at machines or counters.
- Transfers to your own or anyone else’s account.
- Payments to financial institutions, including insurers and investment funds.
- Bets, lotteries and e-wallet top-ups.
- Buying and selling foreign currency and precious metals.
- Any transaction later refunded.
| Condition | What the published terms say |
|---|---|
| Standard rate | 0.1% on card purchases |
| Higher tier | 0.5%, with a weighted average balance of €300 or more |
| Monthly cap | €100 |
| Minimum payout | €0.10 |
| Accrual | Calculated for the calendar month, credited on the 10th of the following month |

The higher tier rewards the balance you keep, not how much you spend. A freelance designer in Valencia who keeps a €300 float in Blackcat moves into the 0.5% tier; a colleague who sweeps her balance to zero each month stays on the standard rate, even though both spend the same amount. Reaching the higher tier takes no extra spending at all.
The cap is just as practical. At 0.5%, reaching the €100 monthly limit would take €20,000 of card purchases in a single month, so for everyday spending the cap rarely comes into play.
Cash at the checkout, and what EU law allows
Cash at the checkout sits outside payment services regulation as long as it comes with a purchase. PSD2 excludes cash provided by a retailer at the customer’s explicit request just before a payment for goods or services. That is why shops ask you to buy something first.
This is about to get easier. Under the payment services deal agreed in November 2025, retailers will be able to hand out up to €150 in cash with no purchase at all, using chip and PIN. Those rules had not yet taken effect at the time of writing, so a shop that asks for a purchase today is following the law as it stands.
Availability varies by country. The service is common in Germany and Ireland and less widespread elsewhere, and in some countries roughly a third of people do not know it exists. If you have never tried it, a large supermarket is the easiest place to start: pay by card and ask for cash at checkout.
Getting the most from your cashback card
A cashback card works best when the rest of the account works for you too. Before choosing, look beyond the headline rate at the costs that sit around it: currency conversion mark-ups when you pay abroad, charges for cash machine withdrawals and any monthly account fee.
A card with a modest rate and low everyday costs often delivers more value over a year than a higher rate weighed down by fees, so read the tariff schedule alongside the reward terms.
It also helps to use each kind of cashback for what it does best. Pay by card for your shopping to collect purchase rewards, and use cash at the checkout when you need notes. Cash withdrawals do not attract rewards under most programmes, Blackcat’s included, but they do spare you a separate trip to a cash machine.

Frequently asked questions
How do cashback rewards on debit cards work?
You pay by card, the merchant’s provider pays a fee, and a share of it is credited back to you. Payouts are usually calculated monthly rather than applied at the till.
How is purchase cashback different from getting cash at checkout?
Purchase cashback adds money to your balance. Cash at the checkout pays out your own money as notes, at the same time as your purchase.
Can prepaid cards offer purchase cashback?
Yes. The EU interchange cap covers prepaid cards as well as debit cards, so prepaid programmes are funded in a similar way and can offer comparable rates.
Which fees can reduce the value of card rewards?
Currency conversion mark-ups abroad, cash machine withdrawal charges and monthly account fees. Compare them alongside the reward rate to see the full value of a card.
Do all purchases qualify for cashback?
Not all. What purchases qualify for debit card cashback is set by each programme; withdrawals, transfers, e-wallet top-ups and currency purchases are commonly excluded.
When are cashback rewards paid out?
When debit card cashback is paid depends on the provider. With Blackcat, rewards are calculated for the calendar month and credited automatically on the 10th of the following month.
What happens to cashback when a purchase is refunded?
Refunded transactions are excluded, so the reward for that purchase is reversed along with it.
